Backflow Prevention

Protecting the public drinking-water system from cross-connections and contamination.

Cross-Connection Control Program

Asotin County PUD administers a cross-connection control program to protect the drinking-water distribution system. A cross-connection can allow non-drinking water or contaminants to flow backward into customer plumbing or the public water system.

Backflow prevention assemblies are mechanical devices installed where a drinking-water supply connects to a non-drinking-water system. Customers are responsible for maintaining required assemblies and arranging testing when applicable.

Backflow Prevention Assemblies

High-hazard protection

  • Air gaps (AG)
  • Reduced Pressure Backflow Assemblies (RPBA)

Other approved assemblies

  • Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA)
  • Double Check Detector Assemblies (DCDA)
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies (PVB)
  • Spill Resistant Backflow Assemblies (SVB)
  • Atmospheric Vacuum Breakers (AVB)

Annual Testing

Washington State Department of Health regulations require backflow assemblies to be tested annually by a certified backflow assembly tester.
